Al Shabaab's American Recruits
The September attack on the Westgate Mall in Kenya by Al Shabaab, the Al Qaeda affiliate in Somalia, confirms the group's desire and ability to expand its operations outside of Somalia and its capacity to attract American recruits to its cause. Nearly 50 American citizens and permanent residents have either traveled to Somalia to join or have otherwise aided the terrorist organization since 2007. The group claims that three Americans took part on the Mall attack in Kenya.
